Blair seeks to break the mould

Article Abstract:

UK Labour party leader Tony Blair would seek the support of MPs from other parties on specific matters, even if his party were to win a clear majority at the next general election. He is emphasising the importance of alliances, and hopes that left-wing Conservatives, along with the Liberal Democrats, would lend their backing to a future Labour government under certain circumstances. He has stated his belief that a considerable number of Conservative MPs identify more closely with the new-style Labour party than with the Conservative party.

Blair puts the family at heart of moral crusade

Article Abstract:

The most successful society is one built upon the values of the extended family, according to UK Labour party leader Tony Blair. Adults and the society they create are responsible for determining whether a child grows up to be a good person or a bad person. The family plays a vital role in teaching children about right and wrong, and must be at the centre of a 'decent society.' Some Conservatives have claimed that Blair is attempting to gain moral superiority while he is in fact planning to extend state power.

Blair delays open government; Freedom of Information Bill will have to wait

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has decided not to include a Freedom of Information Bill in his government's first-year programme, having been advised by civil servants that it will take some time to prepare the appropriate legislation. The government will now issue a White Paper detailing plans for legislation which will come into effect in 1999. This decision has received criticism from some Labour MPs. Other observers fear that ministers may become too accustomed to closed government.
