Blinded by the light
Article Abstract:
The Tate Gallery in London, England, is currently holding an exhibition entitled 'Turner in the North of England, 1797.' This covers works which resulted from an eight-week sketching tour undertaken by the artist in the North of England when he was 21 years old. He later came to associate the places visited on this tour with the first signs of his artistic maturity. He discovered a beauty of which he had previously been unaware, and also began to discover himself. He paid particular attention to ruined abbeys and castles, and often portrayed their romantic grandeur.

Article Abstract:
A small exhibition, 'The Dieppe Connection', demonstrates the English-French influence in 1815-1939 when Continental travellers arrived at the port en route from London to Paris or other parts of Europe. Turner is hung next to Pissarro's Pointillist-Impressionist works and Monet is compared with Turner, who restored the popularity of landscape. Nicholson's knowledge of Braque, the Cubist, is reflected in 'Bocque', where he tried collage before his best period. About 12 Sickerts portray the melancholy of Dieppe, a typical harbour town of transit.

The heartfelt tug of time
Article Abstract:
Turner's painting 'The Fighting Temeraire,' which is currently on show at the National Gallery, London, is his most famous work, and has been the subject of many differing views. There is still uncertainty about the starting point for the painting, and it is now clear that it depicts an imaginary event, rather than something which actually happened. The old warship it shows represents certain parts of Turner's own identity.
