Bluewater's ripple effect on retail

Article Abstract:

The new Bluewater shopping centre near Dartford, England, which features 320 shops in three themed areas, is set to attract large numbers of shoppers. Facilities include a 200-space creche, 13,000 car-parking spaces and a 12-screen cinema. Mixed views are being expressed about the likely impact of Bluewater, which will be the largest regional shopping mall in the UK, on the retail industry as a whole. It is widely agreed that the retail sector is over-supplied, but retailers are very interested in establishing a presence in large shopping malls, despite high rents there. This is because shoppers are very attracted to such developments.

Smokin' once again

Article Abstract:

British American Tobacco (BAT) has seen a significant revival in its fortunes. It has abandoned its diversification programme, and no longer faces the threat of anti-tobacco litigation. Its share price has risen dramatically, and it is set to derive considerable benefits from a large-scale merger with Rothmans. This deal is a key step towards BAT's goal of becoming the largest tobacco company in the world. It will give BAT a world market share of 16%, compared with the 17% held by Philip Morris.
