Bodyguards 'abandoned engineers.' (telephone engineers kidnapped in Chechnya, Russia)

Article Abstract:

Five of the six bodyguards employed to protect the telephone engineers kidnapped in Grozny, Chechnya, Russia, did not return fire when they were attacked by as many as 20 armed kidnappers, according to some reports. Granger Telecom, the company employing three of the engineers, has stated that it was aware of the risks of sending employees to Chechnya, but believed that the men were safe because the company was contracted with the Chechen government and with Chechen Telecom. The Foreign Office is now likely to put pressure on Russia to resolve this hostage crisis.

Article Abstract:

Britons Camilla Carr and Jon James, who were seized in Jul 1997 in Grozny, Chechnya, have been released. It is believed that they were held hostage by kidnappers under the control of Arbi Barayev, who is strongly opposed to the Chechen government, and a radical Wahhabi leader. Their abduction could have been an attempt by the Wahhabists to damage the image of the Chechen government, or it could have been financially motivated. It is not known whether a deal was struck to secure their release.

Chechnya's hostages name their own price

Article Abstract:

Kidnapping remains extremely common in Chechnya, even though there is no longer any fighting there. Most kidnappings are carried out by armed separatists who have little to do since the fighting stopped. There is no proper police force in Chechnya, so kidnapping is an extremely easy way of obtaining money. The main targets are foreign aid workers, with nine employees of the Red Cross alone having been kidnapped in 1996.
