Bombay's first crack at freedom

Article Abstract:

Bombay, India, has an architectural heritage from colonial times of Victorian Gothic buildings. The University of Bombay's library is in need of conservation work, and a project has begun involving the university, British Council and Department of Trade and Industry. There are a large number of ruins in India, so selecting any building for conservation could be criticised on the grounds that others are just as in need of repairs. The conservator, Anthony Peers, argues that the skills of craftsmen involved in the library restoration will be useful in other projects such as hotels in Bombay.

Claudio and Calvin

Article Abstract:

Claudio Silvestrin is an architect who has carried out work for Calvin Klein and will take part in a project by Karl Heinrich Muller who is setting up a German cultural center. Silvestrin's work is minimalist and his style was selected by Klein after his divorce and is linked with monastic solitude. A new Calvin Klein store in London, England, will also be based on Silvestrin's work, as is a store in Paris, France. Meanwhile, Silvestrin has designed a cloistered hostel for Muller.

Have I been here before?

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken at Sheffield University, England, indicates that holistic architecture can play a valuable role in easing the problems encountered by elderly people suffering memory loss. Such people benefit from being able to control lighting and noise levels and open windows. Calming colours such as blues and soft yellows can be effective, as can diffused daylight. Different finishes can be used to help elderly people with memory loss identify the route they are on.
