Border deaths expose gulf in Middle East

Article Abstract:

The recent murder of seven Israeli schoolgirls by a Jordanian soldier has served to greatly heighten tension between the two countries. This is particularly the case because the incident took place in the so-called 'island of peace,' a 250 acre area of orchards and fields on the Jordan river. This is protected by Jordanian soldiers, but is freely open to Israeli farmers and tourists. The incident was possibly prompted by tense diplomatic exchanges between Jordan and Israeli a short time previously.

Forget Utopia, here comes the city

Article Abstract:

Israel's kibbutz movement has been operating for 90 years, attracting people who want to live a life based on communal values. Over recent years, common activities have started to be dropped, with people ceasing to eat together, for example. In some cases, varying wage scales have been introduced, rather than people all being paid the same, regardless of the amount of work they do. Kibbutz leaders are now recognising that the movement is becoming less relevant as a model for Israeli society.

Gunning for the Iraqi people

Article Abstract:

The sanctions imposed on Iraq in 1990 have placed this country under economic siege. The country's electricity supply is collapsing, and there are also serious problems with water supply and sewage treatment. A significant proportion of Iraqi children are suffering from malnutrition, and 24% are underweight. It is now time to lift the sanctions, accepting that sanctions will not affect whether Iraq acquires weapons of mass destruction.
