Both New York and London's premier ballet companies struggled in the wake of their founders' deaths. Why has ours come off worse?
Article Abstract:
The New York City Ballet (NYCB) does not seem to have been negatively affected by the death some years ago of its founder, George Balanchine. The company has a considerable number of strong male dancers, and is managed by a long-standing team of ballet staff. In contrast, the Royal Ballet has not managed to come to terms very well with the death of its founder, Frederick Ashton. It has no clear driving force to encourage new productions, and has been unable to keep Ashton's heritage alive.
