Bottomley would shut uneconomic NHS hospitals
Article Abstract:
Virginia Bottomley, the new Secretary of State for Health in 1992, will continue with the NHS changes and expects most hospitals to become self-governing trusts within two years. Uneconomic hospitals will be closed and London teaching hospitals are under review by a commission led by Sir Bernard Tomlinson. Reforms demonstrate the concerns of GPs and districts and thus need for investment and improvement. Community care of the elderly, handicapped and mentally ill will transfer to local government in April 1993 and adequate resources must be forthcoming. Mrs Bottomley, 44 years old, gained a degree in sociology at Essex University and worked as a psychiatric social worker.

The decline of Miss Jean Brodie
Article Abstract:
Teaching is a very rewarding job, according to Claire Head, who was dismissed from St David's School for Girls in Ashford, England, in 1997 after parents complained about her unusual teaching techniques. An Industrial Tribunal has now upheld her claim of unfair dismissal, and she will receive compensation. However, she believes that it will be very hard for her to find another teaching job. Her case raises wider issues about how handling a situation badly can ruin somebody's whole career.

Who loves the firm today?
Article Abstract:
Many employees in the UK feel extremely insecure, being aware that they could unexpectedly become the victim of corporate downsizing. This has reduced their trust in company managers, and they are no longer prepared to be loyal to their employer. Some people are no longer prepared to take on a permanent job, even if one becomes available to them, preferring to stick to short-term contracts with many different employers.
