Brazil reels from 'the vodka effect.' (economic problems in Brazil)
Article Abstract:
The prospect of economic crisis in Brazil has prompted many wealthy Brazilians to move their money abroad. They have not responded to efforts by the Brazilian government to keep money in the country by raising interest rates. Forthcoming general and presidential elections are adding to Brazil's economic problems, with critics of President Fernando Enrique Cardoso claiming that he is failing to take appropriate action. Almost all economists agree that Cardoso will have to introduce strict fiscal measures to reduce the country's budget deficit.
