Britain needs scientists with the creative touch

Article Abstract:

It is vital that more information is obtained about the UK's future engineering and science skills requirements, according to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. For this reason, this organization has commissioned research from the Institute for Employment Studies. This will provide evidence about employer requirements and consider the type of transferable skills employers seek. Some higher education institutions are now trying to devise courses that place more emphasis on skills such as report writing and communicating with accountants and managing directors.

Oxford has its eye on the heavens

Article Abstract:

The Surveyor 98 mission to Mars will provide a great deal of information about conditions on Mars, according to Professor Fred Taylor, head of the sub-department of atmospheric, oceanic and planetary physics at Oxford University, England. This mission will use a pressure modulator infrared radiometer designed by staff at the university. Taylor is assisting the European Space Agency in the planning of the Mars Express mission, and is also working with scientists in Finland on a scheme to land one or possibly more meteorological stations on Mars.

Get Wise to engineering

Article Abstract:

The UK's Women into Engineering and Technology (Wise) initiative seeks to encourage more girls to consider careers in science, engineering and technology. Girls perform well in these subjects up to the age of 16, but boys dominate these subjects at A-level and beyond. The Equal Opportunities Commission is now looking at possible measures to abolish traditional stereotyping of subjects. Wise aims eventually to ensure that all women are computer- and technology-literate, regardless of the career they choose.
