British industry will struggle to get ahead in the single market

Article Abstract:

The implementation of European economic and monetary union (EMU), which now seems likely to go ahead on schedule on Jan 1, 1999, will create a true single market in Europe. This will in turn have significant implications for Europe's industrial structure. Overcoming traditional national boundaries will spark off a new wave of agglomeration, which will have mixed repercussions for the UK. A strong presence in service industries will work to the UK's advantage, but EMU will almost certainly not be beneficial to the UK's manufacturing industry.

EU forecasts rule in all bar one for EMU

Article Abstract:

The European Commission is to recommend that all 15 member countries except Greece should be permitted to join European monetary union (EMU) if they wish. There is still some concern about the ability of Italy to meet the criteria for joining EMU, with the European Commission's economists having assumed that this country's budget will go ahead as planned, despite political difficulties. The European Union as a whole is expected to see economic growth of 2.6% in 1997 and 3% in 1998.

The euro, coming sooner than you think to a shop near you

Article Abstract:

The launch of the euro in continental Europe in Jan 1999 will inevitably have an impact in the UK, even though the UK is not yet participating in European monetary union. There are indications that the use of the euro will be quite extensive in the UK, even among small companies and individuals. The government has made arrangements for companies to pay taxes and file accounts in euros, and some companies may offer their employees the opportunity to be paid in euros.
