British water cannons used on marchers

Article Abstract:

Pro-democracy protesters in Jakarta, Indonesia, have at least twice been dispersed by police using Tactica armoured personnel carriers and water cannons supplied by UK company GKN. Some observers believe that arms supplied over a considerable period to Indonesia by the UK have been used in human rights violations, especially in East Timor. The Indonesian government has made a formal commitment not to use equipment from the UK in human rights protests, but this agreement does not cover Tacticas, which are not regarded as defence equipment.

Learning lessons in the lift

Article Abstract:

US and Japanese trade negotiators have had lengthy talks about greater access to the Japanese market for foreign vehicle manufacturers, but have still been unable to reach any agreement. The US is sticking to its demands for more Japanese dealerships in foreign cars, increased US access to the domestic replacement parts market and more purchases by Japanese manufacturers of US vehicle parts. It is now insisting that Japan gives specific targets for increased purchases of foreign parts.

Defection exposes weakness in Kim's leadership

Article Abstract:

The government of North Korea has been caused considerable embarrassment by the defection of Hwang Jang Yop, a close adviser of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, to South Korea. He is the highest ranking official ever to defect from North Korea, and his decision comes at a particularly sensitive time, with North Korea facing severe economic hardship. His defection may prove a turning point for a regime which has not previously shown any sign of being politically divided.
