Brown envelopes, white knights and humping humbug
Article Abstract:
The election defeat of the UK Conservative party in May 1997 seemed to indicate that ordinary people in the UK were signalling their distaste for political sleaze. The incoming Labour government seemed determined to deal with sleaze-related cases that were still unresolved, and also introduced a Freedom of Information Bill under which the practice of unattributable press briefings was abolished. However, there have since been two cases in which the government was at least guilty of hypocrisy, if not of sleaze.

Let me tell you just why I can't stand old Labour
Article Abstract:
There have always been good people in the UK Labour party, but the party as a whole has achieved very little in recent decades. Indeed, the reason why Prime Minister Tony Blair is so popular with ordinary voters is because he is regarded as not belonging to the Labour tradition. There is a lack of clear ideological debate in UK politics, and it is now time to open up politics to allow anybody to participate. If this does not happen, then political activists will merely debate with each other.

Bands gotta split, politicians gotta plot - can anyone tell me why?
Article Abstract:
Politicians seem to be naturally attracted to plotting, even if there is very little to plot about. They are drawn to others who hold similar views, and seek to define themselves through being able to say who they are not. In contrast, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair does not subscribe to this form of tribalism. He does not feel that he leads a group that is superior to others, and it can be argued that this is why, in theory, he supports electoral reform.
