Byers pledges aid for Longbridge

Article Abstract:

UK Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Stephen Byers has indicated that government ministers are investigating ways of ensuring that BMW does not close down the Rover plant at Longbridge, England, on which around 50,000 jobs depend. However, ministers also recognize that the future of the plant has become very uncertain. The closure of the plant would have a very negative impact on the economy of the West Midlands, as well as marking a watershed for the UK car industry as a whole.
