CWC snubs Microsoft with software plans for digital TV internet access
Article Abstract:
Network Computer Inc, a joint venture of software concern Oracle and Netscape, will supply software for the digital television service to be launched by Cable and Wireless Communications (CWC) in autumn 1998. The software will give subscribers access to the World Wide Web and allow them to send and receive electronic mail, as well as providing access to 200 channels. It will eventually allow online shopping, the placing of online bets and the playing of online games. CWC's decision is a blow for Microsoft, which has been attempting to monopolize the market for set-top box software.

Britain's motor parts suppliers learn Japanese
Article Abstract:
Three Japanese car plants will be supplied with 1.2 billion pounds sterling worth of components a year by British makers and 750 million pounds sterling worth by other European suppliers by the mid 1990's. Japan will be making 600,000 cars in Britain by 1995. Japanese factories in America are also supplied by British components firms. Defects, high prices and long delivery times had to be improved to meet Japanese requirements. The Japanese renegotiate prices yearly, usually downwards, but their aim is continuous improvement. Improved productivity is good for all customers.
