Campaigners who blend reason with grandstanding: Greenpeace's call for a ban on all oil exploration is unnecessary
Article Abstract:
Greenpeace believes that the only really effective way to reduce global warming is to ensure that existing fossil fuel reserves are not exploited any further and that no new exploration work takes place. It is calling for a gradual phasing out of fossil fuels, with legislation to ensure that reserves are not developed. Some observers do not share Greenpeace's views. They point out that oil will come from other countries if the UK stops producing it, and also believe it would be better to ban the use of coal, which is much more damaging to the environment than oil.

Greenpeace, please grow up!
Article Abstract:
Environmental pressure group Greenpeace, which is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary, has always been characterised by a mixture of courage and charisma. Over recent years, it has attempted to adopt a new approach, realising that simply being an opposition force is not sufficient. It is seeking to put forward solutions and to establish dialogue with business, especially companies involved in activities which could have a direct impact on the environment. It may find that it will have to listen more carefully to business, taking a more pragmatic approach.

Down in the bog, mischief stirs
Article Abstract:
The forthcoming National Bog Day is one of a series designed to encourage people to visit boglands, which have traditionally received little attention despite their environmental richness. Bogs have generally been regarded as having little use for humans, and have the disadvantage of being extremely slow to grow. However, conservationists believe that many struggling boglands can now be restored to full health.
