Chechens' terror at Russian bombers

Article Abstract:

It is becoming clear that Russian military commanders are issuing horrifying threats to villages in Chechnya, even though Russia is trying to conceal this by preventing international aid agencies and journalists from gaining access to the areas concerned. Russian troops have been bombarding Chechen villages, thus going against Russia's commitments to human rights. Observers believe that the military campaign is being intensified because presidential elections are to be held in Russia shortly.

Moscow nervous as Chechens vote for new leader

Article Abstract:

The election to choose a leader for Chechnya, which is to be held shortly, is a cause for considerable concern in Russia. The voters of Chechnya are greatly interested in the election campaign which is currently taking place, and it seems that a genuine contest is being held. Russia is particularly concerned about the apparent increase in popularity of guerrilla commander Shamil Basayev, and will find it very hard to recognise the election result if Basayev wins.
