Article Abstract:

Recent moves by supermarket chain J Sainsbury to considerably reduce the price of 200 items are clearly designed to attract more customers, but are also an indication of wider reaching changes in supermarket pricing policies. As prices become more stable, consumers are more aware of variations, and supermarkets are now having to adapt to this trend. Consumers are now more concerned about price and value for money than being offered a constantly expanding range of new items. Changes in consumer attitudes have also resulted from the introduction of loyalty cards.

Time to change the rules of the fiscal game

Article Abstract:

It is clear that there are problems with the way in which tax and spending policies are determined in developed countries, as finance ministers are generally unable to achieve a satisfactory balance between taxation and budget spending. It is now time to improve the way in which governments draw up and manage public accounts. In particular, there should be figures for unfunded liabilities and multi-year budgets which allow a clear view of the long-term consequences of each decision.
