China fights to get runaway economy under control

Article Abstract:

Head of the Communist Party in China Jiang Zemin demanded an end to corruption and obedience to central government as Peking seeks to control economic problems, social unrest and fraud. Governor of the People's Bank of China Li Guixian is expected to resign in favour of Deputy Prime Minister Zhu Rongji on Jul 02 1993. Local officials caused 20% inflation by obtaining bank loans for investment projects in the free market. There is greater regional disparity and peasant and state industry workers are more vociferous than in the 1989 democracy movement.

Wealth and power split new superpower into three

Article Abstract:

China is experiencing a growing divide between rich and poor. The east of the country, which covers Shanghai, Peking and the coastal provinces, has only one-third of the population, but has attracted four-fifths of the foreign investment which has been made in China since 1979. In contrast, many people in the west of the country still live in extremely impoverished conditions. The situation in the centre is more variable. Economic imbalance may cause serious difficulties for China as economic reform begins to take effect.

People's Army sets up shop to pay its way

Article Abstract:

Deng Xiaoping's economic reforms of 1979 advised the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in China to pay for itself. It utilised its facilities and by 1993 produces 2/3 of the nation's motorbikes at the China North Industries (Norinco) state arms company. Military factories produce 66% civilian products. The state aims to increase this as it means defence cuts are unnecessary. The PLA is inviting foreign investment and collaboration.
