Coming in on a wing and a pair - of Mausers
Article Abstract:
Correspondent Hugh Pope took a flight from Tbilisi airport in Georgia, CIS to the Black Sea port Sukhumi and found the aircraft greatly overloaded with unruly soldiers carrying vast quantities of arms and ammunition. The 250 mile trip could not be done overland due to bandits and rebels on the roads and the railways. The day he spent in Sukhumi, visiting frontline positions in the warring town, was much quieter and much less stressful than the return air journey. Again the plane was overloaded, 230 passengers cramming into a 170-seater. Passengers literally had to fight their way on and off.

From Istanbul by 'people bus.' (crossing Europe by car)
Article Abstract:
Travelling from Istanbul, Turkey, to the UK by car presents many challenges. The best route is through Thessalonika, Greece, and to the port of Igoumenitsa, some 1,300km from Istanbul. From there, it is possible to travel by ferry to Italy, where there are long stretches of fast motorways. Having travelled northwards through Italy, it is then best to go through the Mont Blanc tunnel and travel for a short time through Switzerland. The traveller can enjoy the beautiful countryside of eastern France, and the Channel coast can be reached in around 10 hours from Mont Blanc.

Turks plan to set up 'security zone' in Iraq
Article Abstract:
Turkey aims to destroy the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) to prevent an independent Kurdistan. Turkish troops cover 160 square miles inside Iraq. The West expects them to withdraw as demanded by the Iraq Kurds. The PKK stated it had negotiated a tactical withdrawal, but they do not represent all the Kurdish people. Iraqui Kurds and Turks are fighting together for once. Ankara will hold a meeting about northern Iraq on Nov 14, 1992, for Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia to approve the Turkish security zone.
