Everyone knows Henry Wood set up the Proms. But who remembers the man who hired him to do it?
Article Abstract:
The influence of Sir Henry Wood on the history of the Promenade Concerts is being widely acknowledged as the centenary season of the concerts begins. However, little attention is being given to the influence of Robert Newman, an amateur singer who became the first lessee and manager of the Queen's Hall. He commissioned Wood to conduct promenade concerts there, and was acknowledged by Wood as a close friend.
