Cracks in a City monument
Article Abstract:
Lloyd's of London built up a strong reputation as the world's most important insurance centre. 'Names', who had to be extremely rich, agreed to underwrite risks to the extent of assuming unlimited liability. If there were no large claims, the Names made enormous profits and deferred paying tax. Wishing to increase capital in the mid-Sixties, Lloyds extended its membership and accepted less wealthy Names. Recently, large claims have been submitted and some poorer Names could not pay up and were bankrupted.

US takes first prize for self-delusion
Article Abstract:
The 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta gave an interesting insight into how Americans view their country and how it is viewed by the rest of the world. Media coverage in the US emphasised the successes of American athletes and gave a strong impression of clear American supremacy. In fact, the US won considerably fewer medals than the combined countries of western Europe. Americans seem to be seriously out of touch with the real status of the country in the modern world.
