Crunch time nears for the television gamblers

Article Abstract:

Shares in ITV companies will rise dramatically in value if the UK government agrees to a reduction in the levies which they pay to the Treasury. Companies which had to make very high bids in the ITV licence auction in 1993 will be keen to renew their licences as quickly as possible, hoping to benefit from a large discount. Those which paid a very low price for their licences will be happy to wait until the end of 2002, the theoretical end of the licence period, before renewing. The Independent Television Commission has indicated that it will look favourably on companies seeking to reduce their fees.
