DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: TOBACCO PROMOTION FEAR

Article Abstract:

Tobacco is being promoted in developing countries using football tournaments such as the forthcoming Euro 2000, contravening regulations devised by Fifa, it emerged on 31 May 2000. The president of football's governing body, Sepp Blatter, is expected to reply to claims from campaign groups which go against its tobacco-free approach. Campaigners have dubbed the upcoming tournament in Belgium and the Netherlands Dunhill Euro 2000 due to links with BAT Industries' tobacco brand. The UK government and the European Union have tried to outlaw tobacco sponsorship but legal moves by cigarette companies are preventing them from imposing the new regulations.

UK: GENETIC TEST FOR NICOTINE ADDICTION

Article Abstract:

Scientists have developed a genetic test that determines whether smokers will become addicted to nicotine. It could revolutionise the success rate of anti-smoking therapies. The test developed at Oxford University has found a link between the way the body metabolises dopamine and nicotine and the likelihood of an individual being a smoker. Variations in enzymes, which metabolise dopamines, determine the amount of tobacco that smokers consume. Heavy smokers need to smoke to restore the brain's level of dopamine to normal.
