Deadly chaos threatens Timor poll
Article Abstract:
A referendum in East Timor is to go ahead despite violent clashes. The United Nations (UN) has stated that the referendum is to go ahead, despite the violence. There is a risk to democracy of not permitting the referendum because of thuggery, according to a UN spokesman. The Indonesian police has responsibility for security in East Timor, and the UN officials are not armed and can only advise the police. The UN spokesman believes that the Indonesian police should assess why they did not tackle the violence in east Timor.

The United Nations (UN) is to supervise a referendum on Aug 30 1999, on the future of East Timor, which was invaded by Indonesia 24 years previously. Some elements within the Indonesian armed forces have sought to sabotage the referendum and they have organized terrorist groups who have killed independence activists and burned villages. The police are not seen as able to provide protection from the terrorists. UN volunteers have been threatened with having their throats cut.

Shock to the system as UN dallies in Dili
Article Abstract:
Dili is a town in East Timor which is host to a United Nations mission. There are 1,000 personnel from 67 nationalities who have been brought in for a referendum scheduled in East Timor at the end of Aug 1999. The rates that can be charged by interpreters and hoteliers have risen. There has also been a change in attitude in Dili, where there is increased confidence among those who seek independence, and who have carried out a major demonstration.
