Death and the maidens
Article Abstract:
Francis Poulenc's opera 'The Carmelites,' which was completed in 1955 after lengthy work on the composition and orchestration, uses dialogues written by George Bernanos. These dialogues were adapted by Bernanos in 1947 from the 1931 novel 'The Last to the Scaffold' by Gertrude von Le Fort, a young German Catholic convert. Le Fort based her novel on the true story of the murder of nuns from the convent in Compiegne, France, but the novel is in fact an allegorical portrayal of what Le Fort predicted as the fate of religious people under Nazism.

Death of the African dream
Article Abstract:
Africa appeared to be going through a period of optimism in 1997, with a revival in democracy and the visit of President Bill Clinton to souther Africa, but this has changed. The Congo crisis has major security implications and involves armies from five countries in Africa. There is a lack of agreement on security and foreign policy in Africa. It will not be easy to achieve a rapid conclusion to problems in Congo, and this affects hopes for stability in Africa.
