Diplomat reveals Britain's betrayal of Tibet

Article Abstract:

The UK and Indian governments failed in their moral duty to make it clear that there was no legal justification for the Chinese invasion of Tibet, according to Hugh Richardson, who was British representative in Tibet between 1946 and 1950. He recalls that there was no sign of Chinese influence on Tibetan issues or on the Tibetan government. He feels that Tibet, with its ancient civilization, deserved to survive. He expresses great regret about how the UK dealt with the situation in Tibet.

Nobbling the watchdogs

Article Abstract:

Schools are going to be allowed to choose their own inspectors, which could undermine present standards. The Education Minister, Kenneth Clarke, is promoting a scheme where schools pick their own privatised inspectors according to what qualities and qualifications they would like to see in them. The inspectors would tender for the jobs and be supervised by Her Majesty's Inspectorate, but national standards would be hard to impose.
