Dole's TV wit lacks razor edge

Article Abstract:

Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole is generally regarded as having performed quite well in the first of his two televised campaign debates with president Bill Clinton. He showed grace and wit, in sharp contrast to earlier campaigning. However, he is unlikely to have persuaded many voters to vote for him rather than Clinton. Indeed, polls taken after the debate indicate that it will have made no difference at all to the views of the vast majority of the electorate.

Dole trails in crucial Midwest states

Article Abstract:

Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole remains 12-15% behind president Bill Clinton in almost all opinion polls, with no real progress having been made since the summer conventions. He has almost no backing at all in traditionally Democratic states, and is trailing badly in states which he must win in order to be elected president. Even in states where the Republican party usually performs well, he is only on an equal footing with his rival.

Third-man theme strikes US chord

Article Abstract:

A growing number of US voters and politicians are now expressing dissatisfaction about the country's two-party, adversarial political system. Voters are now becoming more interested in independent candidates, and well-known challengers may well receive many votes in the next presidential election. There is particular speculation about whether General Colin Powell will stand as an independent candidate.
