Article Abstract:

The department of the environment building in London, England, which is characterised by three towers, has for many years been widely regarded as a very unsightly building. The government has run an ideas competition as part of plans to remove the towers and replace them with a new development. The competition has been won by Italian architect Gabriele Tagliaventi, who has suggested a development made up of courtyards, arcades and piazzas which will bring together homes, offices and shops. His plans have attracted mixed views, with some observers claiming that the development has no links with the existing townscape.

The second Blitz of St Paul's

Article Abstract:

Plans for building large office blocks in Paternoster Square which were exhibited to the public in the summer of 1991 found 77% support. The City Corporation listed 22 reservations about the plans, drawn up by Paternoster Associates, who favour pseudo-Classical facades. The City corporation was concerned that views of St Paul's would be obscured. Revised proposals in 1992 are not very different. Piecemeal development on a smaller scale would introduce more life to the City.

Not so much a Sixties block, more a work of art

Article Abstract:

The South Bank Board plans to demolish the Hayward Gallery, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Purcell Room in London, England without making the area unrecognisable. Buildings need life outside to attract visitors inside. Younger gallery visitors appreciate the architecture of the South Bank buildings. Post-Modern architect Terry Farrell's plans for the South Bank will be used but without the Post-Modern buildings.
