Dozens killed as gangs roam Timor saying: 'Vote for Jakarta or you die.'

Article Abstract:

It is planned that a referendum will take place in East Timor in Aug 1999 in which East Timorese will be able to choose between full independence and an 'autonomy package' under which there would be a local parliament and police force but foreign policy, finance and defence would remain under the control of the Indonesian central government. It is clear that almost all East Timorese want full independence, but they are being severely intimidated by members of a militia who are threatening to kill them if they vote for full independence.

The torture of East Timor

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian government treats the people of East Timor extremely badly, according to a young activist calling himself Putu who is campaigning for the independence of East Timor from Indonesia. He comes from a royal East Timor family which was forced to flee to the jungle when the Indonesian armed forces invaded in 1975. He worked for the resistance from an early age, and was first tortured when he was only 12 years old. He has now escaped from East Timor, but is still on the run.

In the jungle hills of East Timor, the resistance fights on after 23 years

Article Abstract:

Members of Fretilin, the East Timorese guerrilla army, continue to live in remote jungle hideouts. Many of them were young when the Indonesian army invaded East Timor in 1975, and all have lost relatives in the fighting, hunger, epidemics and purges that followed the Indonesian invasion. They have been fighting a guerrilla war since 1978, when the Indonesian army began using supersonic jets against them. It is thought that there are now only a few hundred active fighters.
