Elected mayors could give Personality to local government

Article Abstract:

Local councillors in the UK are aware that they have no choice but to accept the government's plans to revive local government, as they are held in very low esteem by voters. Local councils must accept radical changes or simply disappear altogether. The government's plans include elected mayors, a move which it is hoped will allow ordinary people to identify more closely with local government. Mayors would bring an element of personality to local government at a time when the prospects for local councils seem very bleak.

When 'responsibility' is not a straightforward matter

Article Abstract:

It is very difficult to dismiss child abductors as merely criminals. Very often, there are deep psychological issues behind the actions of a child abductor. Many child abductors have suffered a miscarriage that has prompted an extreme psychological reaction, for example, while others may have fallen victim to cultural programming. There are many women who need a great deal more support than they are able to receive from their partner, family or local GP.

Local politics: who gives an X?

Article Abstract:

The forthcoming local elections are likely to serve simply as a way for voters to express their views on national political issues. Local matters will have little influence on the results, with voters not using the elections as a way of judging how local government in their area has been performing. Local elections have now become nationalised, thus reducing the legitimacy of the local electoral process.
