England's gentle revolutionaries

Article Abstract:

Campaigners have lost the first stage of their battle to prevent Guinness from selling the site of a derelict distillery in Wandsworth, London, England, to Safeway for redevelopment into a supermarket, car park, petrol station and luxury riverside apartments. The campaigners, who belong to a group called 'New Levellers,' are squatting on the site, but will now be evicted. They see themselves as following the radical Puritan movements which flourished after the English Civil War. They will inevitably be defeated eventually, but offer a strong vision for the future.

A new friend for the North

Article Abstract:

Very mixed views have been expressed about 'The Angel of the North,' a very large sculpture constructed by Anthony Gormley for the town of Gateshead, England, at a cost of 800,000 pounds sterling. Some observers believe that the money would have been better spent in other ways, and others feel that its sheer size, with a wingspan of 175 ft, is negative. However, others feel that art gives a location dignity, and point out that the sculpture can be seen as a reflection of the thriving nature of the local economy.
