English as she should be taught?

Article Abstract:

Professor Dorothy Wedderburn, previously principal of the Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, London, and member of the university council, investigated distrust in the Department of English and Drama at Loughborough University. Critical theory and women's studies aspects of studying English were unacceptable to some staff members and students. Sexist language in teaching and racist language in students' work were advised against, but definitions differed. Professor Peter Marchant, who ran a programme for the State University of New York, Brockport, was asked to leave because of alleged sexual harassment, but given no chance to defend himself.

I knew all about condoms, but nothing of love

Article Abstract:

Ceri Evans was pregnant at 13 because she felt under pressure from friends to have sexual intercourse but did not think she could obtain the Pill without her mother's knowledge. Despite sex education lessons at school, teenagers are poorly informed about pregnancy. Bristol has an Educational Unit for Schoolgirl Mothers which is staffed by people who can put information across to these youngsters. Ceri, and social workers, think children of about nine years old should be given the sex education that she did not receive until secondary school. Children should also be taught how to deal with their feelings.

School's out for ever: the teachers' story; I didn't see it as terrible

Article Abstract:

Geoffrey Mott, 50, is taking early retirement because he feels political attitudes to schooling prevent him enjoying teaching in the 1990's. He started teaching PE and sociology in 1972 after gaining a BEd as a mature student and worked at Aylestone High, Brent, a comprehensive school with 1,650 pupils. He influenced the introduction of mixed ability teaching instead of streaming. He did a thesis on whether there should be black schools for an MA on urban education. In 1987 he left to do permanent supply.
