Ernie Wilkins

Article Abstract:

Composer, orchestrator and saxophonist Ernie Wilkins played the tenor saxophone as a child in the 1920s and 1930s. He played in a military band led by altoist Willie Smith while undertaking his military service, and in 1948 was a member of the last big band led by pianist Earl Hines. He joined the Count Basie band in 1951, and had a strong influence on the big-band scene through his composing and arranging for this band, with which he remained until 1955. He worked with Ernie Wilkins throughout the 1970s.

Dee Barton

Article Abstract:

Orchestrator, composer, trombonist and drummer Dee Barton was born in Houston, TX, in 1937. He began playing the trombone at an early age and went on the road in 1956 with the big band headed by Ralph Marterie. He gained a full scholarship to the North Texas State University in 1957.

Ralph Burns

Article Abstract:

Composer, pianist and orchestrator Ralph Burns was born in Newton, MA, in 1922. He studied at the New England Conservatory and became a key member of the Woody Herman First Herd of 1945.
