Even New Labour needs the unions

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Labor party should loosen its links with Labor unions, according to a pamphlet by two Fabians, Alan Johnson and Tony Young. They have little understanding of why unions are necessary since they have not undergone hardship from employment. Labor unions contribute financially to the Labor party and help give ordinary working people enough confidence to become members of parliament. Severing ties with labor unions would make the Labor party more narrowly based, with candidates from the legal profession, academia and media, and support would be lost for election campaigns.

New Labour's newest campaign is based on immaturity and innuendo

Article Abstract:

There is concern that some candidates from the political center and left could win seats on the United Kingdom Labor party National Executive Commitee. The Labor party has behaved as though it were an opposition party during its first year of power, and there has not been enough co-operation. The prime minister shows greater maturity than his ministers in tackling the problem of internal differences of opinion. The outcome of elections should be decided by the membership .

Thumbscrews won't work on Bluidy Tam

Article Abstract:

Thomas Dalyell, or Tam Dalyell, is a Scottish member of parliament from the Labor party who opposes his party's plans for devolution for Scotland. He has been an important campaigner for democracy during the governments of Margaret Thatcher, and his role is likewise important under a Labor government. The argument he pust forward that the United Kingdom could be broken up by devolution is mistaken, but he should be heard because there should be more debate on the topic.
