Experts warned: 'Don't dump rig.' (controversy over disposal of Brent Spar oil storage rig at sea)

Article Abstract:

The UK government decided to go ahead with the dumping at sea of the Brent Spar oil storage rig despite a warning from scientists at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food that disposing of it in this way could endanger marine life. This has been revealed following the disclosure by Greenpeace of a leaked memo, in which the contaminated seawater and oil sludge inside the rig's storage tanks are described as very toxic to marine life. The disposal of the rig has brought opposition from throughout Europe.

David's great victory over Goliath

Article Abstract:

Environmental group Greenpeace has successfully battled against Shell, the world's largest oil company, forcing it to abandon plans to dump the Brent Spar oil platform at sea. The extensive campaigning undertaken on this issue by Greenpeace had severely damaged the company's image, and it has lost a great deal of petrol sales. Greenpeace's main success has been in ensuring that the issue of oil installation decommissioning has received widespread publicity.

Shell backs down on Brent Spar

Article Abstract:

The UK government has criticised Shell for giving in to pressure from environmental campaigning group Greenpeace and from European governments and abandoning plans to dump the Brent Spar oil rig in the Atlantic. Shell still sees deepwater disposal as the best environmental option, but its subsidiaries were coming under great public pressure, especially in the form of customer boycotts. The company is now seeking a deepwater safe anchorage for the rig.
