Farewell to a right royal president

Article Abstract:

The example of Irish President Mary Robinson, who is shortly to leave office, counters many of the arguments of those who are opposed to elected heads of state. She was determined from the very beginning to make significant changes to the presidency, and took great care to make contact with ordinary people. She developed a new outward-looking foreign policy for Ireland, and gave a new vibrancy to the presidential role. It is now time to consider whether the UK really needs its Royal Family, which is surrounded by great pomp but lacks the real authority of an elected head of state.
