Federal army puts slow squeeze on Dubrovnik
Article Abstract:
Dubrovnik, Croatia is still under siege. The UN states that no peacekeeping forces are needed there because only 7% of the population of 70,000 is Serbian. On December 6, 1991, a rocket mortar, artillery and machine-gun assault destroyed ancient palaces and modern buildings and killed 29 people. Shooting continues every night; a 9 pm curfew is enforced. The Mayor Pero Polijanic is optimistic that the army will leave. The navy has left after heavy artillery was smuggled into the city. Residents think the UN should have pressurised the army to pull back to Montenegro, enabling refugees to return.
