For better, for worse ...
Article Abstract:
Performing a marriage ceremony on behalf of a vicar who failed to arrive on time was an uplifting spiritual experience, according to Stephen Grant, a former church server who is now studying at university. He was aware that he was acting without legal authority, but was motivated by a strong desire to help the couple, aware that there was a danger that the ceremony would not be able to go ahead. The incident has created considerable controversy, especially with regard to whether the couple's marriage is legal or not.

Police on a winner in drink-driver stakes
Article Abstract:
The UK Department of Transport introduced a six-week anti-drink-driving campaign on July 16 1996, and police report that advertising has reduced offences over the ten years up to 1995. In 1995, 6.3% of 11,900 drivers tested after road accidents failed the test, versus 28.1% of 45,000 drivers in 1985. Statistics from the Department indicate that those who are driving normally consume less alcohol, that there has been an increase in cars being left at home, and that the accident rate is falling.

Dear Woo, My dear Nancy; a trove of letters comes to light
Article Abstract:
A new volume of letters written by Evelyn Waugh and Nancy Mitford, to be published shortly, gives an interesting insight into the way of life of these two upper-class writers at a time when most ordinary Britons were suffering the after-effects of the second world war. Mitford was regarded as a socialist, but her letters reveal an attachment to the old regime and the comforts of the aristocracy. Waugh was constantly concerned about not being able to maintain an upper-class lifestyle.
