Foreign projects rise, but jobs fall

Article Abstract:

The number of foreign investment projects in the UK rose to 618 in 1997 to 1998, up by 28% from the previous year, according to the Invest in Britain Bureau. These projects created or safeguarded more than 124,000 jobs, of which 46,000 were new jobs. However, the number of jobs created by foreign investors establishing a presence in the UK for the first time fell to just over 16,000, from 24,000. The fall in job creation is the result of a move towards more high-technology investment, according to the Dept of Trade and Industry. The UK is still popular with investors, but both the method and the type of investment are changing.

The political circus is coming to Harrogate

Article Abstract:

There will be a strong political element to the forthcoming 1996 annual conference of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). This will be particularly the case because the conference is taking place only two weeks before a pre-election budget. The main theme will probably be Europe, with the CBI being opposed to any party making a promise in its election manifesto which rules out the possibility of the UK entering a single currency during the next Parliament.

Article Abstract:

UK Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Stephen Byers has stated that extremely high levels of executive performance justify very high levels of remuneration. He believes that the UK should not hesitate to pay world class salaries to world class executives. The government has opted to allow shareholders to decide on executive salaries, but aims to encourage shareholders to be more pro-active in opposing pay packages which are not justified by achievement.
