Forget dumbing down - books and bookshops are moving up

Article Abstract:

There has been a significant increase in the number of book titles published in the UK over the 1990s, according to journalist Andrew Marr. Many of the most popular books set very high intellectual standards, and buying books is no longer regarded as unfashionable. Bookshops themselves have become more attractive, and it is now a great pleasure to spend long hours browsing in them. Inevitably, some of the books being published are not particularly worth reading, but in general the future for book publishing and purchasing in the UK seems bright.
