Fresh hope for spinal injury victims

Article Abstract:

Israel's Weizmann Institute has undertaken tests on rats which may ultimately offer a breakthrough to people who have been made paraplegic by spinal injury. Professor Michal Schwartz, who led research which has so far lasted 15 years, discovered that the rats regained the use of their back legs when their spinal cords were severed. The team discovered that by using cells located in the immune system and known as macrophages, spinal nerves can regenerate themselves and help the injury to heal. Rats were able to move their back legs just 20 weeks after being treated and clinical trials are now planned on humans, although it is not known when this will commence.

Finding a ready market for a Hebrew Hamlet

Article Abstract:

Israelis attending a production of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' by the Haifa Theatre Company in Tel Aviv, Israel, can see parallels in this play with their own situation. They see Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is widely opposed by intelligent Israelis, in Claudius, the murderer of Hamlet's father, and read personal meanings into Hamlet's famous anti-war speech. There is strong interest in Shakespeare in Israel, and productions tour to every city, as well as to schools, kibbutzim and factories.
