From actress to national institution
Article Abstract:
Actress Joanna Lumley has won the hearts of a whole generation of men in the UK. She has had a high profile since the 1970s, and has been widely admired for her talent, glamour and commitment to worthy causes. She has recently had a fellowship named after her at Oxford University, and there are signs that she may see this as a fitting end to a very successful career. However, she still has many causes in which she has a great interest, so is unlikely to fade from public view completely.

Beware: herbs that can do you harm
Article Abstract:
The UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food will publish a report on research by the National Poisons Unit, based at Guy's Hospital, London, which wants Kew Gardens to house a herbarium to cut poisoning in the UK. It would cost about 500,000 pounds sterling to create the herbarium, holding no less than 500 kinds of herbs, but it should pay for itself after four years of operation. The project is the only one of this type apart from one in China.

Medicine man: hero or quack?
Article Abstract:
Witch doctor Benjamin Burombo, one of 90,000 in Zimbabwe, believes that he has found a cure for Aids. He has attracted considerable attention with his claims, and is now charging around 500 pounds sterling to treat patients from abroad, although he will still treat poor local people free of charge. The government has tried to discredit his work, fuelling bitterness between traditional healers and conventional medical practitioners.
