From fruit to futures
Article Abstract:
There have been mixed reactions to plans by the London International Financial Futures Exchange (Liffe) to construct a very large new trading facility on an area of wasteland adjoining Spitalfields Market on the edge of the City of London. This will bring 7,000 new jobs to the area, and could lead to a significant local revival. However, some local groups are concerned about the plan, fearing that it will bring an excess of activity. It has been necessary to plan a very sensitive development, but this has not been presented well to local pressure groups and residents.

Reach for the sky?
Article Abstract:
Building extremely tall buildings, such as the Baltic Exchange in the City of London, designed by Norman Foster and Partners, appears to result from a natural competitive urge. The list of tall buildings in the Guinness Book of Records leads to the conclusion that there are two kinds of tall buildings, the kind which are designed to give the designer an edge over other designers, and those which need to be tall for practical reasons, such as chimneys and television masts.
