General Sir John Hackett

Article Abstract:

Soldier and scholar John Hackett was born in Australia, but studied painting at the Central School of Art in London, England. He subsequently attended New College, Oxford, England, where he read both Greats and Modern History. He joined the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars, but continued his academic studies. He served in the Western Desert during the second world war, and was later selected to train and lead the 4th Parachute Bridage. After the second world war, he became Commander of the 20th Armoured Brigade, and in 1960 became General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Ireland.

Brigadier Andrew Massey

Article Abstract:

Soldier Andrew Massey was commissioned into the Royal Army Service Corps in 1963. He joined the SAS in 1970, and in 1974 rejoined the Airborne Forces as Staff Captain HQ 16 Para Brigade. He returned to the SAS in 1979 to command A Squadron, and in autumn 1984 became the first Support Service officer to command 22 SAS. He went to the Ministry of Defence in 1988, being responsible for UK Commitment in the Far East and Africa.
