General on the campaign trail

Article Abstract:

Israeli Labour Party leader Ehun Barak seems to be gaining an advantage over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the run-up to the election on May 17, 1999. However, a single incident would be sufficient to tip the balance in Netanyahu's favour again. Barak has attracted considerable publicity, and strong emphasis has been placed on his successful military career. However, he remains a rather enigmatic character. Soldiers have often regarded him as too much of a politician, while politicians associate his manners with those of a soldier.

Peres and his friends in the White House

Article Abstract:

Israeli president Shimon Peres has received considerable support from the US during potentially very damaging incidents over recent months. The US is now backing his efforts to be re-elected. For some observers, Peres is acting cynically, using relations between the US and Israel for his own political advantage. These people are also accusing the US of open foreign intervention on a scale unprecedented for many years.
