Generals lurk behind Nigeria's new democracy
Article Abstract:
Retired members of the military will not wield excessive influence as Nigeria moves towards civilian rule, according to former dictator General Ibrahim Babangida. He rejects allegations that retired members of the military who became rich through corruption will benefit from their links with retired general and former head of state Olusegun Obasanjo, who is almost certain to become the new Nigerian President. Indeed, he states that the military are looking forward to a democratic Nigeria.

What hope for democracy in Africa's most populous state?
Article Abstract:
The forthcoming presidential elections in Nigeria are vital if this country is to have the opportunity to fulfill its potential to become a model for a new form of democracy in Africa. Voters will decide between the All People's Party's Olu Falae and the People's Democratic Party's Olusegun Obasanjo on the basis of ethnicity, rather than policies. The success of the shift towards civilian rule in Nigeria will be largely determined by how the outside world deals with Falae and Obasanjo.

ANC poised for historic landslide
Article Abstract:
Elections are being held in South Africa at national and provincial level, and the African National Congress (ANC) aims to secure a two thirds majority. The ANC could achieve a majority in seven provinces of the total of nine in South Africa. There are concerns about unregistered voters, who may seek to vote. South Africa has seen measures to help poorer people through the provision of water, electricity and housing, but there are still problems relating to racial tensions.
