George Van Eps
Article Abstract:
Guitarist George Van Eps came from a very musical family and began teaching the guitar in 1928 at the age of 15, after having begun working professionally at 11. He was greatly influenced by Eddie Lang, but was also an innovator. He joined Smith Ballew in 1929, and after two years joined Freddie Martin. He began to play solo on jazz records in 1934, when he was a member of Benny Goodman's band. He worked on a freelance basis in film and recording studios after the second world war.

Chan Parker
Article Abstract:
Dancer Chan Parker took professional dancing lessons and became a night-club dancer after graduating from high school. She established contact with many jazz musicians, and in 1950 set up home with alto saxophonist Charlie Parker. They split up shortly before his death in 1955. After his death, she turned to song-writing, and also briefly returned to dancing. She married altoist Phil Woods in 1957, and from 1971 lived in France.

Norman Granz
Article Abstract:
Producer and impresario Norman Granz was born in Los Angeles, CA, in 1918. He studied at the University of California at Los Angeles and took a job as a film editor at MGM after serving the army. He became the first jazz millionaire, demanding equal rights for black and white performers.
