Get down from the international stage, Mr Brown, and attend to taxes at home

Article Abstract:

The UK economy appears to be performing well, even though the international economy is only just entering a weak growth phase. However, a substantial part of the UK's economic growth is based on high levels of international borrowing, with the balance of payments having fallen to a deficit of 3.7 billion pounds sterling in the first quarter of 1999. The situation is being fuelled by the overvalued exchange rate, which is creating significant problems for manufacturing. A reduction in interest rates is required to cut the exchange rate and boost manufacturing, but the Bank of England has adopted the opposite stance.

All hail to the last and best of the socialist dictators

Article Abstract:

Cuban leader Fidel Castro remains a key figure in international politics. The US seeks to disseminate negative publicity about him and about Cuba as a whole, but the many tourists who visit Cuba find that conditions there are much better than US propaganda suggests. Under Castro, life expectancy has risen from 59 years in 1958 to 75 years today, while infant mortality has declined and the number of doctors per head of population is the highest in the world. Literacy levels have been higher than those of the US for many years, and the tourist industry is thriving.

Let's praise the moderniser who became a Socialist terror

Article Abstract:

Tony Benn, who is to stand down as a Labour MP at the next election, derives his political heritage from democracy, liberty, collectivism and the confidence vested in him by his patrician middle class upbringing. When he became an MP, he was a modernizer and a technocrat. He has often been most effective on constitutional issues, but this should not be regarded as his political legacy. As his career progressed, he became prominent as leader of the left wing of the Labour party.
