Give her regards to Broadway

Article Abstract:

Soprano Dawn Upshaw thought when she first began studying singing that she would work commercially on jungles but Gregorian chant and renaissance polyphony changed her outlook completely. She first encountered these forms in her first year at the Manhattan School of Music where continuous training pushed her voice up from alto to an excellent soprano. She loves to sing sorrowful incantations and sings personally because she feels they are personal. She tries to approach everything she sings as a first performance, probing and questioning long written material just as she would a new work.

Give my regards to Broadway

Article Abstract:

Listening to other singers and experimenting a great deal have proved very useful approaches for singer Kim Criswell. She has worked very hard to cover the breaks in her voice, and is aware that technology is no replacement for good singing. She now tends to focus on one-off performances rather than entire shows, and is in great demand on the cabaret circuit. However, she would be prepared to become involved with a show if it was one in which she is really interested, such as William Finn's 'Falsettos.'

Rocky road to stardom

Article Abstract:

The temporary music platform which has been built on Aspen Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, allows music and nature to be brought together. The 48th Aspen Music Festival will include works by Haydn, Mendelssohn and Messiaen, and will run throughout the summer season. However, cultural events are staged throughout the year in Aspen. Many of these are centred on the music school in Castle Creek Valley, where around 900 students are enrolled.
